Our Founders
Averil Southward & Jill Lemon

The story of Lakeland Art Gallery begins with two remarkable sisters, Averil Southward and the late Jill Lemon, whose love of art and unwavering commitment to their local community brought a vision to life.

For many years, Averil and Jill were at the heart of the Ellesmere art community. Both accomplished artists themselves, they understood the importance of providing opportunities for people to discover, develop and share their creativity. Their contribution to the arts reached far beyond their own artwork — they actively nurtured and encouraged artists of all ages throughout the Ellesmere district.

In 1996, the Ellesmere Art Group Charitable Trust was established, with Jill serving as Chair for several of the following years. Averil joined the group in 2010 becoming Secretary/Treasurer the following year, and together, the sisters continued to foster a vibrant local art scene through art groups, workshops for adults and classes for schoolchildren. They believed passionately that art should be accessible to everyone and that a thriving artistic community could enrich the lives of the people around it.

It was Averil who had the vision of bringing a dedicated art gallery to Leeston. With determination, enthusiasm and a great deal of hard work, she collaborated with several local artists and the landlord to turn that idea into reality. In 2017, Lakeland Art Gallery opened its doors. The gallery was managed entirely by volunteers and a long list of committed artists and friends have over the years, contributed with their time and expertise in providing a wonderful space where local artists could exhibit their work, the community could come together, and visitors could experience the creativity of the Ellesmere region.

The Gallery was more than simply a place to display art. It was the realisation of Averil and Jill’s shared vision. It represented years of dedication, encouragement, friendship and belief in the importance of art within the community.

The Lakeland Art Gallery may have closed its physical doors, but the legacy created by these two sisters continues. Through the Ellesmere Art Group Charitable Trust and this online gallery, their commitment to art, artists and the local community will continue to inspire future generations.

We are immensely grateful to Averil and Jill, and to the many local contributing artists and friends for everything they have given to the arts in Ellesmere —their perseverance, their encouragement and the countless hours. Together devoted to making that vision a reality.

Thank you, Averil and Jill.
